Suvorov Museum
The first memorial museum dedicated to the persona of the eminent Russian field marshal, Alexander Suvorov was opened in 1904 by Nicholas the 2nd and other representatives of Russian nobility. The mysterious building of this museum was built to the project A. I. Gogen in the style of Russian defense building. The mansion features loop-holes, watch-tower and brick walls that are decorated with mosaics made by famous painters Maslennikov and Zoshenko, the later is the father of the prominent Russian satirical writer: Mikhail Zoshenko. Among numerous mosaics that adorn the perimeter of the museum the onlooker’s eye will be captured by two gems made to the sketches accomplished by Popov and Shabinin “Suvorov’s crossing the Alps” and “Suvorov’s leaving for the campaign of 1799”- the time when the field marshal achieved the acme of his military career. Till 1918 when Bolsheviks came to power and closed the museum, it was very popular among people as the charismatic personality of the field marshal who had never lost a single battle could not but evoked interest. On display there were personal belongings of Alexander Suvorov admired not only among his troops but by Catherine the Great and Paul I. In 1951 the decision was made to start restoring the museum which was raised to the ground by a whiz-bang during the WWII. The restoration work lasted for almost ten years and starting from 1998 it was opened to the public. In 1991 it was given its original status – The State Suvorov’s Memorial Museum and one can relish the memorabilia of Russian glory.
